TypeWhisper for Linux
Open-Source Linux Dictation Software
TypeWhisper is an open-source dictation project with macOS, Windows, and iOS editions. Because our team works on Linux, we wanted a version that fit our own desktop workflow.
Excel on the Web created a community Linux port based on the existing TypeWhisper project. We maintain the Linux branch and make it available for other Linux users who want the same speech-to-text workflow.
TypeWhisper for Linux brings together dictation, text insertion into other applications, audio-file transcription, and recording. Its interface also includes searchable history, a dictionary, snippets, profiles, and optional AI text-processing features.
Our work focuses on Linux desktop integration, installation and startup behavior, and continued maintenance of the Linux branch. The documentation covers platform requirements, configuration, and differences between Linux desktop environments.
The Linux GitHub repository contains the source code and releases. The project wiki provides setup instructions, feature guides, and troubleshooting. The original TypeWhisper project remains the upstream foundation.
This project shows how we adapt and maintain existing open-source software to solve a practical need on a different platform.
